Curriculum for Nursery Settings 

This curriculum aspires to create in children positive dispositions towards learning which, if nurtured, will last a lifetime and provide the firm foundation which all our children need to support them in realising the four purposes of Curriculum for Wales. It addresses the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of curriculum design to support children to develop as: 

  • ambitious, capable learners 

  • enterprising, creative contributors 

  • ethical, informed citizens 

  • healthy, confident individuals 

This curriculum recognises that every child in our setting is unique and that their development is rapid between birth and five years of age. It supports holistic development by keeping the developmental needs of our children at the forefront of our pedagogical practice. It recognises and values the Welsh language as an integral part of the unique culture of Wales, and as a language which should be taught in all settings in Wales. 

The key principles essential for holistic and meaningful learning for all children start with skilful, observant and interested adults, who provide authentic and engaging experiences in effective, exciting environments. Our role is to use our observations to plan experiences and environments that are meaningful and relevant to children’s interests. This curriculum ensures that the mandatory elements of Curriculum for Wales are embedded within an appropriate pedagogical framework that focuses on the needs of the developing child through five developmental pathways – belonging, communication, exploration, physical development and well-being. 

Effective, child-centred pedagogy, which is responsive, dynamic and embedded in strong relationships, is essential to realising the ambition of this curriculum. Although the principles of effective pedagogy are embedded throughout this curriculum, it is particularly important for us to ensure that the learning environment within our setting provides consistent opportunities for the following: 

  • play and play-based learning 

  • being outdoors 

  • authentic and purposeful learning 

  • physical literacy. 

Useful Information 

Names 

The school kindly asks parents to ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labeled with the child’s name, please. 

Fruit and Milk 

All children in the infant department of the school receive milk daily. There is no charge for milk. If your child would like a healthy snack with their milk, we kindly ask you to send a piece of fruit with your child daily. 

Physical Education 

Your child will require black shorts and a white t-shirt for PE lessons. Your child will come fully dressed in their PE kit on the day of their PE lesson: 

Welsh Class: Thursday

English Class: Wednesday 

Reading 

Your child will have a reading sent home with them every Friday and we ask that it is returned to school on the Monday. This will allow for your child to read with you at home over the weekend and then have further opportunities to practise their reading in school as usual, and you will have e-books (Tric a Chlic) for Welsh stream and (Oxford reading owl) for English stream on your child’s online HWB account for you to practise your child’s reading during the week. 

Homework 

Homework will be set in your child's homework book on a Tuesday and to be completed by every following Monday. More details about children’s homework and how to access it can be found in the ‘Homework’ pack
