Curriculum for Years 1 and 2

This curriculum builds on the foundation of the Nursery/Reception class. The curriculum enables our learners to make progress in their learning and contribute to the 'four purposes'.

This is the starting point and the aspiration for every child in Wales. We want to capture the enthusiasm of our pupils straight away and see the importance of the pupil's voice as key to the success of learning. We want to ensure diverse, differentiated activities that provide rich and equal opportunities for everyone. We want to nurture and encourage each child's independence.

The children will cover the following areas of learning and experience:

• Languages, Literacy and Communication

• Mathematics and Numeracy

• Expressive Arts

 • Health and Wellbeing

• Humanities

• Science and Technology

The following cross-curricular skills are part of the Year 1 and 2 curriculum- • literacy

• numeracy

• digital competence

Our hope is that the children will develop to be-

• are ambitious, capable learners

• are enterprising, creative contributors

• are principled, informed citizens

• are healthy, confident individuals

Useful Information

Security

If the door is closed, it will be necessary to ring the bell at the main entrance door. Names Parents/guardians are asked to ensure that the children's clothes, bags and lunch boxes are labelled with the child's name, please.

Fruit and Milk

The children in year 1 and 2 get milk every day at school. The milk is free for the children. If your child would like a piece of fruit with the milk, then we kindly ask you to deliver a piece of fruit with your child to school daily. Thank you

Physical education

Your child will need exercise clothing, namely: white t-shirt and black shorts/trousers, please. Your child will come to school in exercise uniform on the following days:

Welsh stream: Tuesday

English stream: Wednesday

Collecting Children

Parents/guardians need to ensure that the school has information relating to the people who will collect the children from school on a daily basis together with your child's personal password. We need this information to ensure the safety of the children.

Reading

A reading book for your child will be sent home with them every Friday and we ask that it be returned to school on the following Monday. This will allow your child to read with you at home over the weekend and then have further opportunities to practice reading at school as usual, and there will be e-copies of books Tric a Clic (Welsh stream) and Oxford Reading Owl (English stream) ) on your child's HWB account for you to read on an ipad/tablet/laptop with your child at home.

Homework

Homework will be placed in the homework book or on your child's HWB account every Tuesday to be completed by every Monday.
